Human tears are an exception to the “bodily fluids are disgusting” heuristic. Because human tears are sterile, there is no risk of infection from contact — even from kissing the tears on the baby’s cheek.

Instead of eliciting disgust, tears elicit support from caregivers.

The evolutionary advantages of this exception should be obvious.
