Why do you write, “You deserve it?” Tesia Blake

In my experience, the people who feel “deserving” of things are miserable, because they expect someone else to fulfill their expectations of entitlement.

Moreover, the people who tell you that “You deserve a break today,” or a vacation, or a new car, or anything, are trying to exploit you by selling you something you don’t need and won’t make your life better.

I’m recently divorced, so I can relate to aspects of your column, but I don’t relate to “You deserve it.”

I don’t think you know your reader’s individual circumstances and what they are deserving of, which gives me the impression that you wrote this last line as a memo to yourself.

“Deserving” is a dangerous road to an unhealthy sense of entitlement, which is the opposite of the attitude necessary for self-improvement.
